How Can Autism Be Our Greatest Gift?

For many children who are suffering from autism, the hardest thing is not any pain necessarily associated with the disorder, but rather how life unfolds as a result. In school children will be cruel, even adults are that way in adulthood, and over time it starts to become a source of shame and trauma for many of these children.

Parents also contribute to this by feeling exasperated by the disorder. Whenever a parent is frustrated or upset, the child will see this and internalize it as being their fault. In their psychology, something that they have done creates the “problem”.

As a new movie called The Accountant shows, it is perfectly normal for autistic children to grow up and function fine. Not only that, but they can function even better than average people in some instances.

Functioning Autism and Spectrum

What many people do not realize is that autism is a spectrum just like anything else. It isn’t that humans are either autistic or they are not, but rather autism is found on a spectrum. Those who are autistic might have less emotional intelligence and comfort dealing with the world around us, but at the same time, they have incredible logical intelligence.

Some scientists even consider autism to be a form of the extreme male brain. This theory requires more science and understanding, but is interesting nonetheless. By knowing that autism comes on a spectrum, it is much easier to connect with the people as opposed to feeling they are separate from us.

How Do We Foster Autism Intelligence?

Often the best way to foster the autistic children is to do what you would normally do with anyone else. For example, if you have friends planning a Dubai beach holiday, go ahead and join them and bring along your autistic child. Seeing new things might be hard in some instances (such as on the plane), but it will help them to grow as well.

There are plenty of situations like this where parents make the mistake of treating their kids differently rather than giving them the same luxuries and benefits. While some instances should be different for these autistic kids, it doesn’t have to┬áchange that much!
